Orlando ? The University of Nebraska bowling team stands in first place at the 2005 NCAA Championships after one day of competition. The Huskers dominated Thursday’s first round with a team pinfall of 8,518. Fairleigh Dickinson sits in second place with a pinfall of 8,176.
Sophomore Amanda Burgoyne led the Husker contingent by averaging a career-high 251 through four games, and claimed the top spot in the first all-tournament team of the event. Freshman Lindsay Baker joined Burgoyne with a 234 average, which also ranked as a career high. Baker is the only Husker competing who was not a member of the 2004 national championship team.
Shannon Pluhowsky, NU’s lone senior, averaged a 221 to finish out regular play. At the inaugural NCAA Championships in 2004, Pluhowsky was named the tournament’s co-MVP after leading the Huskers’ to the first-ever NCAA women’s bowling title.
Junior Jamie Martin wrapped up the first day in 18th place with a 198 average, while sophomore Adrienne Miller finished day one in 24th place with a 191 average.
The Huskers return to action Friday when they compete in only Baker format games with the top three teams advancing to Saturday’s final rounds. The championship rounds will be televised on a tape-delayed basis by ESPN2 on Sunday, April 17 at 4:30 p.m. (CST).
