Huskers Split Matches at Boise State Tournament

Boise, Idaho --- The No. 60 Nebraska men’s tennis team opened the Boise State Red Lion Spring Break Invitational with a convincing 4-2 victory over Marquette Wednesday before falling to Sante Fe, 4-2, to drop into the consolation bracket.

Due to inclement weather, Nebraska and Golden Eagles moved inside to the Boas Tennis & Soccer Complex, but the change in venue meant little to the Huskers who were focused on getting back on the winning track after dropping their past three matches. Nebraska (8-7) climbed back over .500 as it took four of the six singles matches against MU, while doubles was not contested.

At No. 2 singles, Adrian Szatmary was one of three Huskers to win in straight sets as he grabbed a 6-4, 6-3, victory to snap a three-match losing streak. Along with Szatmary, Jose Rivera also snapped a three-match losing streak with a 6-4, 6-4, victory over Greg Sirotek at the No. 5 slot, while Joel Reckewey picked up his second straight victory with a 6-3, 6-1, win over Pete Van Lieshout at the No. 6 spot.

The Huskers' picked up their fourth point and the win when Jerry Posch came from behind to defeat Eigis Vedrickas at the No. 1 position in a three-set thriller, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6.

In the nightcap, the Huskers fell to Santa Fe, ranked No. 3 nationally in NAIA play, as CSF picked up a pair of three-set victories near the top of the lineup. After Posch was defeated in straight sets at No. 1 singles, Szatmary dropped a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, decision to Daniel Scholten at the No. 2 slot while Clow fell in three sets for the second time in two matches Wednesday. Clow dropped a 6-7, 7-5, 6-3, contest to Ivan Angulo at the No. 3 position.

Rivera and and Reckewey picked up points for the Huskers for the second time Wednesday, as they each earned straight-set victories at the No. 5 and 6 slots, respectively.

Nebraska has Thursday off before returning to action on Friday, March 25 at the Boise State Red Lion Spring Invitational.
