Huskers Fly by Air Force in Senior Day Dual

The No. 8 Huskers ended the regular-season on a high note Sunday, March 13 as they took a 215.45-195.35 victory over No. 17 Air Force in front of over 2,500 Nebraska fans at the DevaneyCenter.  The result extends NU to a three-meet winning streak, the last two of which took place in Lincoln.

The Huskers also extended their event sweep streak into their fifth-straight meet, claiming all three top spots in every event except the floor exercise and high bar.  The trio of senior Mace Patterson, sophomore Jason Wassung and freshman Stephen T?trault alone swept the all-around, pommel horse and vault.  Together the talented all-arounders have swept at least one event in four of Nebraska’s last five meets.

Patterson, one of four seniors honored in the final home meet for Nebraska, won the all-around with a season-high score of 54.70, followed by Wassung (53.60) and T?trault (53.20)

NU began the afternoon with a season-high team score of 36.425 on the floor exercise behind a season-high individual score from Patterson (9.25) for first in the event.  Patterson’s mark was also a new team best over sophomore Jason Wassung’s previous high of 9.20.

On the pommel horse, only T?trault crossed into the nine-point range for either team, gaining a first-place finish with a mark of 9.05.  Patterson grabbed second (8.85) and Wassung rounded out the podium in third (8.65).

On the rings, fifth-year senior Steven Friedman nailed a 9.45 to tie for first place in the event with Nebraska’s Paul Chumreonlert.  This is Friedman’s first event title since returning to competition this season and his last in front of a hometown crowd at the DevaneyCenter.  Also on the rings, senior Adam Tietze earned a career-high score of 8.60 to wrap up his last meet in Lincoln.

Moving onto the vault, the Huskers easily banked their third sweep of the afternoon, with T?trault finishing first (9.60), followed by Wassung in second (9.45) and Patterson in third (9.35).

Patterson and Wassung went on to share the top spot on the parallel bars, both with a score of 9.10.  Chumreonlert finished second (9.075), while junior Derric Wood jumped into the action in third (8.80).

In its final rotation, Nebraska struggled with botched routines on the high bar.  However, co-captain Mace Patterson still managed to step up and lock down a score of 9.30 for first-place to end his home career with the Huskers.

With the win, Nebraska finishes the regular-season with a 13-6 overall record.  The Huskers will now spend the next week gearing up for postseason play, which begins Friday, March 25 at the MPSF Championships in Norman, Okla.  Team competition will take place on that Friday at 7 p.m., followed by event finals on Saturday, March 26 at 2 p.m.
