No. 53 Nebraska Upsets No. 28 Texas A&M

College Station, Texas? The No. 53 Nebraska women’s tennis team upset the No. 28 Texas A&M Aggies, 4-3, Sunday in College Station, Texas. The victory improves NU’s record to 8-1 and 2-1 in league play, and is the Huskers' fourth win over a ranked team this year.

Coach Jacobson was pleased with the victory over A&M.

"It was a big win," Jacobson said. "Having Gitte Ostermann back in the lineup made a big difference in the match. She didn’t feel she could go both days, so we decided that this was the more critical of the matches. Pamela Castillejos clinched the match with a big win."

Nebraska got off to a fast start when it took the doubles point by winning matches at the No. 1 and No. 2 slots. At the No. 1 spot, seniors Gitte Ostermann, who returned to the lineup after missing Saturday’s match against No. 13 Texas, and captain Katie Garcia upset the Aggie duo of No. 28 Anna Lubinsky and Helga Viera, 8-3. At the No. 2 slot, freshman Imke Reimers and junior Ewelina Skaza rolled over Anna Blagodarova and Marisa Druss, 8-2.

In singles play, Ostermann gave NU a big lift at the No. 1 slot. Ostermann, ranked No. 19 nationally, defeated Lubinsky in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. Skaza continued her dominance at the No. 4 slot by defeating Tiffany Clifford, 7-5, 6-1. Skaza improves her record to 7-0 at the No. 4 slot. Junior Pamela Castillejos then clinched the victory when she rolled over Druss in straight sets, 7-6 (4), 6-4.

The Huskers return home to face Drake on Friday Feb. 25, at the Woods Tennis Center.
