San Antonio, Texas?The No. 53 Nebraska women’s tennis team suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday at the hands of the No. 13 Texas Longhorns, 7-0, in San Antonio, Texas. The loss ends NU’s seven-match winning streak and drops the Huskers to 7-1 on the season.
Head Coach Scott Jacobson was delighted with the play of the middle of the lineup.
"Today we played without Gitte Ostermann, our No.1 player," Jacobson said. "The heart of our lineup stepped up today. Milena Schulz-Gartner and Ewelina Skaza played at an amazing level. It was a hard fought battle. We will see what we can do tomorrow against Texas A&M and try to come out with a win."
In doubles play, Nebraska’s No. 3 team of freshman Ellinor Zugner and junior Milena Schulz-Gartner defeated Texas’ Ristine Olson and Courtney Zauft, 8-5. Newcomers Imke Reimers and Ellinor Skaza, at the No. 1 slot, suffered their first doubles loss of the season, 8-2.
In singles play, Schulz-Gartner and Skaza forced their matches to tiebreakers in the second set. Schulz-Gartner who was playing at the No. 2 spot, dropped the first set, 6-4, before battling back to force a tiebreaker, but fell short by losing the second set, 7-6 (7-2). At the No. 3 slot, Skaza dropped two close sets. After falling in the first set, 7-5, Skaza fell narrowly in the second set tiebreaker, losing 7-6 (8-6).
With the victory, the Longhorns improve to 5-0 on the year.
Nebraska was without the services of No. 19 Gitte Ostermann, who was forced to sit out of the match with an ankle injury suffered in practice early this week.
The Huskers hit the courts in College Station, Texas, on Sunday Feb. 20, to take on No. 28 Texas A&M at 1 p.m.
