Nebraska Blanks SMS, 7-0

Lincoln, Neb.?The No. 71 Nebraska women’s tennis team blanked SouthwestMissouriState Sunday morning, 7-0, at the WoodsTennisCenter, extending its home non-conference winning streak to 58.

Nebraska Head Coach Scott Jacobson was pleased with the attitude and emotion his team played with today.

"We wanted to set a good emotional tempo, and we did that with our doubles play," Jacobson said. "After that, we just rolled. Our doubles gave us confidence, and I think it affected SMS's attitude. We are very excited about playing two ranked opponents next weekend because we feel we can compete at that level."

The Huskers' double play was dominant. Seniors Katie Garcia and Gitte Ostermann blanked Elizabeth Garza and Maja Stanojevic, 8-0. at the No. 1 slot, while freshman Imke Reimers and junior Ewelina Skaza mirrored the seniors' success, defeating Paty Manzur and Biljana Gakovic of SMS, 8-0. Juniors Pamela Castillejos and Milena Schulz-Gartner dropped only one game during their 8-1 win over Carolina Ardila and Stephany Harmazy.

On the singles court, NU continued to roll. Ostermann, ranked No. 19 nationally, blanked Garza at the No. 1 slot, 6-0, 6-0, as did Garcia in defeating Harmazy at the No. 6 slot, 6-0, 6-0. NU's seniors did give up a single game throughout the entire match in either singles or doubles play. Schulz-Gartner also recorded her first win of the season at the No. 2 singles slot with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Stanojevic.

The loss drops SMS's record to 1-1 on the season.

The Huskers will hit the courts next weekend in Lincoln, when they face two nationally ranked opponents. On Friday, Feb. 4 at, NU takes on No. 43 Iowa at 2 p.m., and Sunday, Feb. 6, the Big Red will face No. 66 Washington State at 9 a.m.

Admission into the match is free. The Woods Tennis Center is located south of 33rd and O St.
