Lincoln, Neb.-The No. 71 Nebraska women’s tennis team closes out the month January facing the Southwest Missouri State Bears on Jan. 30 in a 10 a.m. match at the Woods Tennis Center. NU hopes to extend its home non-conference winning streak to 57. The Huskers will be shooting for their fourth straight victory to open the season for third straight season. Nebraska is off to a 3-0 start with wins over Creighton, Colorado State and Wyoming before battling the Bears. The Huskers have never dropped a match to any of the four opponents, producing a combined 43-0 mark against the quartet heading into Sunday’s match with SMS.
NU enters the match with the ITA No. 1 Central Regional Ranking for singles play a three-match winning streak and many individual awards. Senior Gitte Ostmernn, ranked No. 19 nationally, received the No. 1 singles ITA Cetnral Regional ranking. Junior Eweilna Skaza also received a singles ranking of No. 25 in the central region. In doubles, senior captain Katie Garcia and junior Pamela Castillejos were ranked No. 8 in the central region, and Ostermann and freshamn Imke Reimers received a No. 11 regional ranking.
SMS marks the third of six straight matches against non-conference opponents for NU. Nebraska extended it non-conference home winning streak to 57 with its victories last three victories. The Huskers' last loss at home to a non-conference team came at the hands of Iowa during the 1997-98 season.
In doubles play, the Huskers have yet to drop a match. Seniors Katie Garcia, a three-time captain, and Gitte Ostermann, ranked No. 19 nationally in singles play, have posted a 3-0 record at the No.1 doubles slot. Freshman Imke Reimers and junior Ewelina Skaza have mirrored that success at the No. 2 slot.
Head Coach Jim Giachino of SMS is entering his ninth year as head coach of the Bears. Giachino brings a young lineup, which does not include a senior, to Lincoln for SMS season opener. Coming off of a 12-10 season in 2004, which included a seven-match winning streak, the Bears return three players this season, including two juniors and one freshman. Following the SMS match, NU will take on Iowa on Friday, Feb. 4 at 2 p.m. at the Woods Tennis Center. Admission is free.
Huskers Lasso Wyoming
The No. 71 Nebraska women’s tennis team dominated Wyoming, 7-0, Friday Jan. 28 at the Woods Tennis Center.The Huskers outscored the Cowgirls 24-7 in doubles play. Seniors Katie Garcia and Gitte Ostermann continued their perfect season at the No. 1 slot defeating UW’s Corina Lazar and Amy Senko, 8-2. The team of junior Ewelina Skaza and freshman Imke Reimers posted their third doubles win as Huskers in the No. 2 doubles slot, winning 8-5, over Karolina Rowinski and Patricia Chien.
On the singles court, NU, which is ranked No. 1 in singles play in the ITA Central Regional rankings, did not lost a single set throughout the day. Ostermann, ranked No. 19 nationally in singles, defeated Lazar, 6-1, 6-0, while Skaza only dropped one game, 6-1, 6-0, win over Amy Senko.
Huskers-Bears History
This is the 14th meeting between Nebraska and SMS. The Huskers have won the 13 previous matches with the Bears. In their last meeting, two years ago, No. 76 Nebraska hosted SMS during one of the toughtest stretches of the season. The Huskers had won four out of the last five matches, losing only to No. 48 Missouri. No. 70
The Huskers defeated SMS, 4-3. After a rocky start, the Huskers overcame its sturggles when senior Jen Baccarani defeated the Bears' Cassandra Godfrei in a three set thriller, 4-5, 6-7, 6-3. The Big Red won four singles slots, including freshman Pamela Castillejos' first career victory. Junior Anna Oehme improved to 5-0 on the season with a civory over Laura Miller in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3. The Huskers extended their home non-conference wining streak to 42 with the victory.
