Lincoln, Neb.?The No. 71 Nebraska women’s tennis team defeated Colorado State, 6-1, on Sunday, Jan, 23, at the Woods Tennis Center. NU extended its home non-conference winning streak to 56 matches and improved its season record to 2-0.
Head coach Scott Jacobson was pleased with the play on the doubles court.
"The highlight of the match was the doubles we are playing," Jacobson said. "We played well and showed composure. Great teams play with passion and that's what we did today. We competed for one another. I am proud of the outcome and effort."
Gitte Ostermann, who is ranked No. 19 nationally, dominated Dasha Zhurin at the No.1 singles slot, only falling in one game during the match, 6-0, 6-1. Junior Milena Schulz-Gartner recorded her first win of the season by defeating Carla Pallares in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. In a three-set thriller, senior captain Katie Garcia defeated Colorado State's lone freshman Anne Andersen, 6-4, 4-6, 10-6.
On the doubles court, NU swept the Rams in three straight matches. Schulz-Gartner and Castillejos posted their first victory of the season, rolling over Jessica Jones and Pallares, 8-1. Ostermann and Garcia recorded their second straight victory at the No.1 slot defeating Dasha Zhurin and Emily Kirchem, 8-5.
The Huskers, ranked No.1 in singles play in the ITA Central Regional rankings, play Wyoming on Jan. 28, at the Woods Tennis Center. Admission into the match is free. The Woods Tennis Center is located south of 33rd and O Street.
