Pascoe, Padden, May Pin Huskers to Second Dual Win of Day

The sixth-ranked Nebraska wrestling team picked up pins from Travis Pascoe, B.J. Padden and Jon May to clinch a 35-12 dual win over North CarolinaState Saturday at Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh, N.C.  Earlier in the day, the Huskers beat North Carolina, 34-7, in Chapel Hill, N.C.

With NU leading the Wolfpack, 17-12, after the 174-pound match, third-ranked 184-pound wrestler Pascoe pinned Jeremy Colbert with eleven seconds to go in the first period.  The win was Pascoe’s 19th straight.  Padden, ranked 14th among 197-pound wrestlers, followed Pascoe with a pin of Zach Garren 4:54 into their match.  At heavyweight, May closed the dual with a pin of Jainor Palma with 58 seconds to go in their match.

The dual started with a 6-3 win by NC State 125-pound wrestler Garrett Cummings. Dominick Moyer responded with an 8-2 victory over Matthew Spengler to tie the dual at three.  Seventh-ranked Matt Murray followed with a 19-4 win by technical fall over Jeff Breese at 141 pounds to temporarily give the Huskers an 8-3 lead.  But at 149 pounds, Alex Hernandez of North CarolinaState pinned 20th-ranked Chris Nedens 1:40 into their match to retake the lead for the Wolfpack, 9-8.

At 157 pounds, 13th-ranked B.J. Wright answered with an 11-5 win over Kody Hamrah to give Nebraska an 11-9 lead.  This was the fourth time this year a Wright win gave the Huskers the lead for good in a dual.  No. 8 165-pound wrestler Jacob Klein followed with a win by fall over Ryan Nowicki 56 seconds into the second period of their match.  However at 174 pounds, Kevin Gabrielson earned a 7-3 decision over Marc Harwood, pulling the Wolfpack within five with three matches to go before the Huskers put the dual out of reach with three straight wins by fall.

Earlier in the day, after losing the first two matches of its dual Saturday, Nebraska ran off eight straight wins to defeat North Carolina at the Carmichael Auditorium.

After losses at 125 and 133 pounds, a pin by Murray with 1:22 to go in the first period of his match against North Carolina's Isaiah Britton put the Huskers on the winning track.  After Nedens registered a 10-8 victory over Christopher Ramos to give Nebraska a 9-6 lead, NU picked up three straight bonus-point wins to put the dual away.  At 157 pounds, Wright pinned Kyle Shelton 1:14 into their match.  Klein defeated Garrett Atkinson by major decision, 16-5, at 165 pounds, and Harwood pinned Alex Maciag 1:04 into their 174-pound match.

Pascoe stretched his winning streak to 18 at 184 pounds with a 14-7 triumph over Justin Dobies.  Padden sprung out to a 4-1 lead and held on to beat David Dashiell, 5-4, and Mitch Manstedt closed the dual with a 3-2 overtime win over Spencer Nadolsky at heavyweight.

The Huskers are now 15-1-1 on the year and are next in action Saturday, Jan. 29, at 7 p.m. in Columbia, Mo. against the 13th-ranked Missouri Tigers.
