The Nebraska swimming and diving team competes in its second team invitational of the season when it travels to Austin, Texas, this Thursday for the Texas Invitational.
The invite is a three-day event that will begin at 10 a.m. with prelims, and conclude at 6 p.m. with finals each day.
The University of Texas hosts the event, which a total of fourteen women's teams will participate, nine of which are nationally ranked. Texas, Arizona, Southern Methodist, California and Wisconsin are among the top ten in the nation.
Last year, the Huskers finished the Texas Invite with 13 top 10 finishes. Amie Buoy led the Huskers with a second-place finish in the one-meter dive. Lauren Bailey was the leading swimmer, placing fifth in the 1,650-yard freestyle (16:52.64) and ninth in the 400-meter IM (5:01.93). NU had five relays finish among the top five, including a second-place finish in the 200-meter medley.
The Huskers last competed two weeks ago at the Minnesota Invitational when they finished third in the team standings with 714 points. In dual action, Nebraska is 3-0 this season, its best start since the 1997-98 season.
Competition begins Thursday at 10 a.m. with prelims, with finals scheduled to start at 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday's events will follow the same schedule.
Buoy Earns Diver of the Month
Amie Buoy was named Big 12 Diver of the Month last Wednesday following an impressive round of performances in the month of November. The junior from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, was awarded the honor after posting a score of 500.45 in the three-meter at the Minnesota Invitational. The score earned Buoy a fourth-place finish, and ranks fifth on Nebraska’s all-time list. It topped her previous career high of 498.60 from the Big 12 Championships last February.
"500 is a very good score," Head Diving Coach Jeff DiNicola said. "I think she has the potential to score even higher, which is a very good sign."
In addition, Buoy placed sixth in the one-meter (258.00) and seventh in the platform (313.05) at the Minnesota Invite. This is the second time in Buoy’s career she has received this honor, also being named diver of the month in December of 2002.
This season, Buoy has competed in seven regular-season diving competitions, placing in the top five on five occasions. She recorded her top performance versus Southwest Missouri State with a first-place finish in the three-meter competition.
Bailey Leads Big 12 in Three Events
Coming off an impressive freshman season, sophomore Lauren Bailey has performed at a high level this year, putting her name at the top of the Big 12 charts in three events.
A pool record time of 9:57.84 at the Devaney Center on Nov. 13 gave Bailey the top spot in the 1,000-yard freestyle. At the Minnesota Invite two weeks ago, Bailey claimed two more top spots in the 500-yard freestyle (4:50.06) and 1,650-yard freestyle (16:37.26).
Both times in the 500 and 1,650 put Bailey's name in third on NU's all-time charts.
