Freshman Leads Huskers to Tournament Title

Mankato, Minn.- The Nebraska bowling team went a perfect 8-0 over the weekend en route to winning the Minnesota State Invitational Sunday afternoon.

The Huskers, who were without All-American Shannon Pluhowsky and Amanda Burgoyne, won all eight matches, besting MinnesotaState, which finished second with a 4-4 record and Vanderbilt, which was winless in eight matches. Pluhowsky and Burgoyne are currently competing with Team USA at the World Tenpin Team Cup in the Netherlands.

"I think we did well without Shannon and Amanda." Head Coach Bill Straub said.  "All in all, we gained experience through the tournament, and helped to improve our overall record."

The all-tournament team was led by four Huskers, as the Huskers picked up their second tournament title in three tournaments. Freshman Lindsay Baker claimed the top spot with an average of 205.6, as she won her first collegiate title. Karla Engh finished right behind Baker with an average of 205.3 to finish second - her best career finish. Other Huskers who were chosen for the all-tournament team included Adrienne Miller, who finished with a 198 average, and Jamie Martin, who averaged a 191 during the eight matches.

The Huskers will now enjoy a break in their schedule, as they are off until Jan. 21-23 when they compete in the Springfield Classic. In addition to Team USA competition, Pluhowsky will compete at the Bowling World Cup next month in Singapore, while Team USA competition is also slated to take place in December at the U.S. Amateur championships.
