Huskers Set to Face Rebels

The Nebraska rifle team will return to action this weekend when it takes on Great American Rifle Conference foe Ole Miss in a home match Saturday. The contest, which marks the third time the Huskers and Rebels have met in head-to-head competition, will begin at 8 a.m. on Nov. 20 at the NU Rifle Range. Nebraska leads the overall series 2-1.

The Huskers split matches last weekend moving their overall record to 4-1. Ole Miss enters the weekend contest with a 3-2 record, fresh off a win over conference foe West Virginia on Nov. 13 in Morgantown, W. Va. The Rebels participated in the Walsh Invitational on Nov. 12, shooting a 4,605 aggregate. Nebraska shot a 4,637 in the competition on Nov. 13.

Nebraska Head Coach Launi Meili sees parallels between the Huskers and the Rebels.

“Ole Miss is also just a women’s team, so we will be on a little more familiar territory,” Meili said. “We are again facing a coach that is getting things started and has a team that is getting more competitive every year. We are going to need to put it together and perform to our ability to win the match.”

Huskers Defeat Tigers, Fall to Black Knights

The Nebraska rifle team defeated Memphis 4,637-4,572 on Nov. 13, before suffering its first loss of the season Nov. 14, falling to Army 4,682-4,611. The two matches, both shot at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio, left the Huskers 1-1 in Great American Rifle Conference matches and 4-1 overall.

The shoot against the Tigers also counted as the Huskers’ score in Xavier’s Walsh Invitational. Saturday’s competition marked the second week of a three-week competition. Army turned in the top performance of the day in a tight competition, shooting a composite 4,643. Xavier finished second with a 4,641, Nebraska was a close third with 4,637 and Memphis finished fourth with a composite 4,572 in the competition. The final scores from each week of the competition will be compiled to determine final standings after next weekend’s shoot.

Junior Misty Chanek led the way for the Huskers in smallbore Saturday, shooting a 591. Kristina Fehlings’ 589 paced the team in air rifle. The solid scores left each in the individual lead of their respective discipline.

Nebraska Head Coach Launi Meili saw some solid efforts in the match, but sees room for improvement.

“Everybody shot four matches last weekend and just about everyone had one or two solid matches,” Meili said. “We are going to need to get our act together and perform better to be competitive in the country. We still have a ways to go.”

Looking Ahead

The Huskers will return to the range Dec. 4 to face the UMKC Kangaroos. The non-conference match will be Nebraska’s final match of 2004. The team will return to action on Jan. 14-15 against conference foes West Virginia and Kentucky in Palmyra, Pa.
