Cincinnati, Ohio ? The Nebraska rifle team defeated Memphis 4,637-4,572 on Saturday, before suffering its first loss of the season Sunday, falling to Army 4,682-4,611. The two matches, both shot at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio, left the Huskers 1-1 in Great American Rifle Conference matches and 4-1 overall.
The shoot against the Tigers also counted as the Huskers’ score in Xavier’s Walsh Invitational. Saturday’s competition marked the second week of a three-week competition. Army turned in the top performance of the day in a tight competition, shooting a composite 4,643. Xavier finished second with a 4,641, Nebraska was a close third with 4,637 and Memphis finished fourth with a composite 4,572 in the competition. The final scores from each week of the competition will be compiled to determine final standings after next weekend’s shoot.
Junior Misty Chanek led the way for the Huskers in smallbore Saturday, shooting a 591. Sophomore Kristina Fehlings’ 589 paced the team in air rifle.
Freshman Christopher Abalo led Army to the win Sunday, shooting a 591 in air rifle and a 588 in smallbore.
The Huskers return to action against conference opponent Mississippi on Nov. 20 at the NU Rifle Range.
