Milwaukee, Wis. -- Joerg Barthel and Jose Rivera advanced to the main draw doubles quarterfinals while four Huskers, including three who won three-set thrillers, moved into the consolation quarterfinals of the Milwaukee Tennis Classic Thursday.
Barthel and Rivera, one of the Huskers’ top tandems last season, won their second straight victory with an 8-6 win over Mark Tate and Adam Ford. Barthel and Rivera will face Adrian Debreyne and Avery Ticer in the quarterfinals Friday at 1:30 p.m. The Huskers also lost a pair of doubles matches, with No. 4-seed Jerry Posch and Adrian Szatmary falling to Chi Pham and Nick Edlefsen, 8-3, while James Clow and Joel Reckewey fell to No. 2-seed Justin Hoevler and Adam Schaechterle, 8-3.
In singles play, ninth-seeded Szatmary led the way for the Huskers in the consolation singles, as he pulled off a solid come-from-behind victory over teammate James Clow, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, to advance to a Friday quarterfinal matchup with Brian Ko. Along with Szatmary, Joel Reckewey advanced to a quarterfinal contest against Mark Tate after earning a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, victory over Jimmy Brannon in the third round.
Before their doubles match, Rivera and Barthel will face off with a berth in the consolation singles semifinals on the line after picking up third-round victories Thursday. Barthel cruised to a 6-3, 6-2, win over Aaron Schaechterle while Rivera had to come back from a second-game defeat for a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4, victory.
Singles and doubles action resumes for the Huskers on Friday at 8:30 a.m. in Milwaukee.
