Huskers Advance to Third Round of ITA Tournament

Los Angeles ? The Nebraska women's tennis team played well again in the second round of pre-qualifying at the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships Sunday in Los Angeles.

Coach Scott Jacobson was pleased with the performance of the Huskers so far in the tournament.

"We have had more people do better than we have in the past," Jacobson said. "Ewelina beat a strong player and it is just a testament to her ability. Overall, it is a testament to the skill level of our players and the level of the program."

On the singles court, a pair of Husker newcomers tallied victories to move onto the third round of the tournament. After a close first set, Ewelina Skaza never looked back and defeated Jacksonville's Emese Sulyos by dominating the second set, 6-4, 6-1. Imke Reimers dominated Kristen Lam of N.C. State while winning in straight sets.

Skaza and Reimers are each two wins away from reaching the qualifying round and joining teammate Gitte Ostermann, who entered directly into the qualifying round.

On the doubles court, Milena Schulz-Gartner and Skaza beat Noelle Lee and Chelsy Thompson of Cal Poly in a close match, 8-6.

The Huskers will again see action on the singles and doubles courts Monday, Oct. 4.
