No. 4 Huskers Claw Past Baylor, 3-1

Waco, Texas ? Freshman Sarah Pavan tied a career-high with 24 kills, while Melissa Elmer matched a season high with 13 kills, leading fourth-ranked Nebraska to a 30-19, 28-30, 30-18, 30-26 victory over Baylor at the Ferrell Center in Waco Saturday evening.

Pavan, who matched her season high set in a four-game loss to Florida A&M on Sept. 11, hit .326 with a pair of service aces and four blocks, as the Huskers improved to 17-1 overall and 11-0 in the Big 12.

She now has five 20-kill efforts, including four in league play, and, moved past NU All-Americans Virginia Stahr (266, 1986) and Allison Weston (277, 1992) for second place on NU’s all-time freshman kills list. Pavan now has a team-high 286 kills this season, as she averages 4.69 kills per game.

Elmer matched her season high in kills set three other times, as she finished the night with13 kills on .423 hitting. She added seven blocks, including three solos, and two of the Huskers’ season-high nine service aces. Dani Mancuso finished with 12 kills while Tracy Stalls added 10 kills and 10 digs, as NU out-hit Baylor, .248-.105 Jennifer Saleaumua also turned in a solid effort with a match-high and season-high 24 digs, eight kills and three aces.

The Huskers used a stifling defense and strong serving to take a 30-19 win in game one. NU held Baylor to .000 hitting as the Huskers led nearly wire-to-wire. BU was within 7-5 before the Huskers used a 5-1 run to take a 12-6 lead on a Elmer service ace, one of three by Husker servers in game one. NU continued to build the lead as Pavan had five kills and two aces, while Elmer had four kills in the opener.

In game two, the Bears used a quick 5-1 spurt to build a 9-5 lead and force a Husker timeout after a kill by Kelly Spriggs. BU eventually pushed the lead up to 16-10 and led 21-15 before Nebraska began its comeback. The Huskers, behind Pavan’s 10 kills in game two, used a 7-1 run to tie the match at 22 after a Pavan kill. The lead went back and forth, and NU led 27-26 after a Saleaumua kill but could not hold on. BU took the lead for good at 28-27 on an ace by Maggie Chlebana and led 29-27 before Elmer’s kill put NU within a point at 29-28. Saleaumua then missed long on her next serve, as BU held on for a 30-28 win.

The Huskers returned from the locker room inspired and carved up the Bears in a 30-18 victory in game three. NU led 7-3 before Michelle Lynch served six straight points, as her serves forced multiple errors by Baylor in helping the Huskers build a commanding 13-3 cushion. NU eventually led by as many as 16 points at 28-12 before a 6-1 BU run put the hosts within 29-18. Stalls’ kill ended the comeback, and NU out-hit the Bears 303 -.000 for the game.

In game four, the Huskers scored five straight points to break open a 3-all tie, highlighted by two kills from both Elmer and Pavan. The Bears trimmed the lead to 12-11 after a service ace by Emily Huston, but NU kept the lead and had a 21-17 advantage. BU then used a 3-1 to pull within 21-20 and force NU to call timeout. Nebraska rallied to score the next four points, taking a 25-20 lead on a Mancuso kill, before BU came right back to close to with 27-25. The Bears were within 28-26, but a kill by Pavan and an Elmer ace ended the match with a 30-26 win.

Nicole LeBlanc paced Baylor (10-11, 3-8 Big 12) with 13 kills while adding 11 blocks for the Bears, who became the first team to out-block Nebraska this season. Adeline Meira also had 11 blocks, as BU held a 14-11 advantage in that category.

The Huskers will play their first home match at the NU Coliseum since Oct. 9, next Wednesday, Oct. 27, when Nebraska plays host to Colorado. First serve is set for 7 p.m. and the game will be carried on the Pinnacle Sports Network, including B107.3 FM in Lincoln. The game will also be televised state-wide on Nebraska Educational Television.
