Huskers Complete Play at ITA Region V Championships

Tulsa --- Joel Reckewey reached the quarterfinals of the consolation draw to lead the Nebraska men’s tennis team in its final day of competition at the ITA Region V Championships Saturday.

Reckewey, who dropped his first match of the tournament Friday to fall into the consolation round, won his first two matches Saturday to advance to the round of eight before falling to Oklahoma’s Lee Gregg in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. One of two seniors on the Husker roster along with Jose Rivera, Reckewey earned a spot in the consolation quarterfinals after defeating Arkansas-Little Rock’s Rain Roigas, 7-5, 6-4, before IllinoisState’s Alban Renard withdrew to give Reckewey a free pass into the quarterfinals.

“This was a tough tournament, with the best players in the region,” said Nebraska Coach Kerry McDermott. “We did good job. Szatmary and Posch played well, it was not their best, but they still won a few matches, and Joel played pretty well today. As a team, we are fighting hard and just need to keep improving. We have seen some improvement as team, and we have a great group of guys, so we just need to keep competing and working hard and we will have a good team by the end of the year.”

Along with Reckewey, Joerg Barthel picked up a win in the first round of consolation play Saturday, earning a 6-4, 6-4, victory over Lucques Maasdorp of Tulsa.

Also in consolation play, Marcus Karner, James Clow and Karl Jones also each dropped their first match of consolation play, as the Huskers ended singles play at the ITA Championships, which are hosted by the University of Tulsa at the MichaelCaseTennisCenter.

In the main draw, No. 5-seed Adrian Szatmary and Jerry Posch, who each advanced to the round of 16, dropped straight-set matches to finish play. Posch fell 6-3, 6-2, to Arkansas’ Adrians Zguns, the No. 2 seed, while Szatmary fell to unseeded Matt Simpson of Arkansas, 6-3, 6-3.

In doubles play, Nebraska’s tandem of Clow and Reckewey fell in the main draw round of 16, as No. 1-seed Ondrej Fukala and Tommy Garrison of Oklahoma earned an 8-6 victory.
