Rivera Advances to Quarterfinals of Georgia Tech Invitational

Atlanta - Jose Rivera won his first match of the weekend to advance to Saturday’s quarterfinal round, as a split squad for the Nebraska men’s tennis team returned to action Saturday at the Georgia Tech Fall Invitational.

Rivera, who was playing in the ?B’ Flight singles, advanced to the round of eight with a straight-set victory over Jay Kieler of Clemson, 7-5, 6-4. Rivera now faces Brett Hunter of Auburn on Saturday.

In ?A’ Flight singles, Joerg Barthel dropped both of his matches on Friday. Barthel fell in the first round, 6-3, 6-2, to Florian Maroldt of South Florida before dropping a consolation round contest against Furman’s Jay Beckett, 7-5, 6-7, 6-2.

Rivera and Barthel were also scheduled to compete in doubles action Friday, but the doubles matches were postponed to Saturday because of darkness.
