Lubbock, Texas ? Eighth-ranked Nebraska used strong efforts from Christina Houghtelling and Sarah Pavan to sweep Texas Tech, 32-30, 30-23, 30-11, Saturday evening at the United Spirit Arena.
Houghtelling, whose previous career high was 10 kills set twice earlier this season, had 11 kills and hit .192, as the Huskers improved to 7-1 on the season with their fourth straight win. Pavan joined Houghtelling in double figures with a match-high 14 kills, while hitting a season-high .550 on 20 attempts. Pavan also added six blocks, as the Huskers dominated the net with a 16-6.5 advantage in blocks. The Huskers, who have won 16 straight against the Red Raiders, held Texas Tech to -.032 hitting, the third time in four matches NU held an opponent to negative numbers.
Amanda McCormick also added 19 digs, as the Huskers kept numerous rallies alive before wearing down Texas Tech.
The Huskers built a big lead in game one, but were forced to rally for a 32-30 win. The Huskers trailed 17-16 before seemingly taking control with an 8-1 run, sparked by the blocking of Pavan and Tracy Stalls. The duo had four blocks apiece in the opener to help NU take a 24-18 lead. The Red Raiders quickly responded with six unanswered points to tie the game. Texas Tech eventually took a 29-28 lead and had a chance to win game one, but Houghtelling’s kill tied the game at 29-all. With the game tied at 30, Stalls gave NU the lead for good with a kill before a Red Raider error provided the winning point for the Huskers.
Houghtelling helped Nebraska get off to a quick start in game two, as the 6-2 sophomore had six kills in a 30-23 Husker win. With Busboom at the service line, Houghtelling ripped off three quick kills to help the Huskers score the first seven points of the game. Texas Tech eventually chipped the lead to 11-8, but the Huskers used a 6-2 spurt to regain control. NU hit .286 in game two while holding the Red Raiders to .000 hitting.
The Huskers blitzed the Red Raiders in game three, jumping out to a 11-2 lead and cruising to a 30-11 win. Jennifer Saleaumua single-handedly provided NU with a big spark with a pair of kills and two blocks in a 5-0 spurt to build a commanding advantage. NU hit .591 in game three while holding the Red Raiders to -.206 hitting. Saleaumua had eight kills, six blocks and 13 digs in the sweep.
The Huskers will return to action Wednesday, Sept. 22, when they travel to Colorado. First serve is set for 8 p.m. and will be carried on the Pinnacle Sports Network, including B017.3 FM in Lincoln. Live video will also be available on HuskersNside.
