Game Week Begins in Husker Camp

Nebraska opened its game-week preparations for its season opener against Western Illinois with a light workout Sunday morning on the Memorial Stadium FieldTurf. The Huskers practiced for approximately one hour and 30 minutes in helmets and shorts.

Offensive Coordinator Jay Norvell said Sunday’s practice capped a good weekend of preparation for the Huskers.

“We were just out in shorts today and we covered some different game situations that we needed to cover,” Norvell said. “Yesterday we had a mock game situation and that was a great learning experience for us. The coaches were up in the box and communicated as we would on a game day. Overall, it was a real positive weekend for us.”

Norvell indicated that the Huskers are ready to move out of the fall camp mode and into a season routine.

“Our guys are stale on practice,” Norvell said. “It is time for them to play. They are at the point where they don’t want to practice against each other anymore. At some point, being on the practice field gets monotonous, and you need a focus to help you keep your edge and right now our focus in Western Illinois.”

The Sunday practice also helped acclimate the Huskers to their in-season schedule. Nebraska will have a Sunday conditioning and lifting session as well as team meetings and film sessions. The players will then take Mondays off throughout the season.

Nebraska returns to the practice field on Tuesday afternoon, as the Huskers continue preparations for Saturday’s 6:10 p.m. game with the Leathernecks. The Nebraska-Western Illinois game will be televised on a pay-per-view basis by Fox Sports Net.
