Canadians Stay Unbeaten in Pool Play

Athens - Former Husker Adam Stern scored one of the Canadian Olympic Baseball team's two runs in a 2-0 victory over Greece on Thursday. The win kept Canada as the lone unbeaten team and improved the team's record to 4-0 in pool play.

"Good ball clubs win games like this," said manager Ernie Whitt. "The fact we were able to get (strong pitching), everything fell into place.

"This puts us in a good position," he added, as Canada stands as the only undefeated team in the eight-team baseball competition after four games."

Paul Spoljari threw 5.1 scoreless innings and gave up three hits and two walks while striking out four batters to record the win.

A Greece error put Canada up 1-0 in the first inning, but the Canadians were held off the scoreboard until Stern came home on an RBI triple by Peter Orr in the seventh inning. Stern, who played for NU from 1999-2001, finished the game 0-for-3.

Following a scheduled break tomorrow, Baseball Canada's Olympic team, which has outscored opponents 25-3 at this summer's Olympic Games with three shutout victories, will resume its round-robin play with a game against Japan at 3:30 a.m. (CDT) on Saturday, Aug. 20.
