Lincoln -- University of Nebraska football coach Bill Callahan completed his football staff on Tuesday with the hiring of Angus McClure as a graduate assistant coach.
McClure, who formerly coached at Sacramento State, replaces Dan McLaughlin, who was named Minnesota State-Mankato's offensive coordinator last month. McClure will work directly with offensive line coach Dennis Wagner, offensive coordinator Jay Norvell and Head Coach Bill Callahan on the offensive side of the ball.
According to Coach Callahan, McClure’s successful coaching and teaching background made him an ideal choice to join the Husker coaching staff.
"We are fortunate to add a coach with Angus’ experience and education to our staff. He has coached and recruited at both the Division I-A and I-AA levels, and has been associated with student-athletes who have not only earned All-America honors, but also reached the National Football League."
"It’s a tremendous opportunity to work at a school like the University of Nebraska," McClure said. "Nebraska has always been known for its offensive lines, and to have a chance to work with coaches such as Bill Callahan and Dennis Wagner is a great opportunity and will be a great learning experience."
McClure brings a wealth of experience to the position, as he has been an assistant coach at the Division I level for the past eight years, including a seven-year stint at Division I-AA Sacramento State. Since joining the Hornet staff as an offensive line coach in 1997, McClure has coached three All-Americans, 20 All-Big Sky Conference selections and six players who have signed professional contracts. His offensive line also played a pivotal role in helping Sacramento State lead the Big Sky in rushing for four years (1998-2000, 2002), and he was promoted to assistant head coach prior to the 2003 campaign.
In 2004, a pair of his players joined the professional ranks, as Marko Cavka was a sixth-round selection of the New York Jets and Chris Frank signed a free-agent contract with the Tennessee Titans. Cavka’s selection marked the first time a Sacramento State lineman had been selected in the NFL Draft since 1997. They join two-time Super Bowl Champion Lonie Paxton (New England Patriots) and other McClure-coached pupils Terence Wagner (New Orleans Saints), Tim Conley (Seattle Seahawks) and John Osterhout (Washington Redskins) in professional football.
In addition to his coaching duties, McClure was also responsible for several management areas of the program, including academics, NCAA eligibility, team travel, summer jobs, AFCA staff representative and professional football liaison.
Prior to joining the Sacramento State staff, he spent one season as an assistant at Division I-A Nevada as a tight ends coach in 1996, where he helped the school lead the nation in total offense. McClure spent four years as defensive coordinator and offensive line coach at C.K. McClatchy High School in Sacramento.
McClure began his association with Sacramento State during his playing days, as he was a four-year letterwinner at the school from 1987 to 1991. As a senior, he was a team co-captain and starter at offensive guard, as the school led the nation in total offense.
McClure received his bachelor’s degree from Sacramento State in 1995. He and his wife, Erin, have two sons, Hamish (5) and Malcolm, who will celebrate his first birthday this December.
