Sacramento, Calif - Becky Breisch began her quest to qualify for the 2004 Olympic Games on Saturday, while teammate Ashley Selig moved up nine places to finish 14th in the final standings of the heptathlon with 5,400 points.
Breisch, who is looking to make the U.S. Olympic team in both the discus and shot puts events, advanced to Monday's finals of the discus competition with a third-place toss of 195-05 feet. Breisch, who will be a senior next season, is a three-time All-American in the discus and took home the 2004 Outdoor NCAA Championship last month. The Edwardsburg, Mich., native is also a four-time All-American in the shot put and earned the 2003 Outdoor NCAA Championship in the event.
The Nebraska record holder in the discus, Breisch will compete in the finals of the discus competition on Monday at 9:30 p.m. (CDT). A seven-time Big 12 champion, she will also compete in the qualifying round of the shot put on Thursday at 7:35 p.m. (CDT).
In the heptathlon, Selig saved her best for last, finishing second overall in the 800-meter run, earning 926 points. She opened the day with an 11th-place finish in the long jump, which earned her 810 points and followed that up by earning 597 points in the javelin with a 19th-place effort. Selig finished in 14th place with 5,400 points
Selig, who will be a junior next season, finished third in the hepathlon at the 2004 NCAA Outdoor Championships last month. The Lincoln native also recorded a fifth-place finish in the heptathlon at the 2004 Big 12 Championships and a second-place finish at the 2003 Big 12 Championships.
Tomorrow's action at the U.S. Olympic Trials can be seen live on NBC from 6-7 p.m. (CDT). No current or former Huskers are scheduled to compete on Sunday.
