Ostermann Named to All-Big 12 Team

Gitte Ostermann, a junior on the Nebraska women's tennis team, was one of 14 players named to the 2004 All-Big 12 team, the Big 12 Conference announced this week.

It was the second straight season Ostermann was named to the all-conference squad. She joins Sandra Noetzel (1997-2000) and Lisa Hart (1996-98) as the only Huskers with multiple selections to the team since the formation of the conference in 1996.

Ostermann entered the spring ranked 19th nationally in the ITA preseason poll, the highest ranking ever for a Husker women's tennis player. She reached the lofty position after a strong fall campaign when she earned a 14-4 record, including an 8-3 mark against players listed in the 2004 preseason rankings. Only two players in the country had more top-100 victories in the fall.

During the spring season, Ostermann started slow following a hand injury that forced her to miss the first five matches of the season. Once back on the court, she opened with a 3-4 record before quickly gaining momentum. Ostermann finished the year with eight wins in her last 12 matches for an 11-7 singles record ? all at No. 1 singles ? and a No. 75 ranking. Ostermann, who posted a 12-6 doubles record with Katie Garcia, also helped the Huskers break into the national team rankings where it moved as high as No. 67 in February before finishing the regular season at No. 74.
