Lincoln, Neb. - Nebraska’s late three-run rally wasn’t enough to stop Missouri (25-23, 12-4 Big 12) from upsetting the 13th-ranked Huskers (38-14, 14-2) 4-3, on Saturday afternoon at Bowlin Stadium.
Ashley DeBuhr (2-2) took the loss for NU, allowing four runs (three earned) in six innings of work. Erin Kalka (21-15) earned the win for Missouri, allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits and striking out 11 Huskers.
Kalka held NU without a hit through the first six innings, before Nebraska struck for three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull within one of MU.
The Huskers were aided by three Missouri errors in the inning. Junior Anne Steffan and sophomore Jessica Yoachim recorded back-to-back, one-out singles to put runners on first and third. Both runners came home during a crazy play that started with a wild pitch.
Steffan scored the Huskers’ first run on the wild pitch and Yoachim advanced to second. Missouri catcher Kathy Masterson attempted to throw Steffan out at home, but her throw got past Kalka, who was covering home. That error allowed Yoachim to advance to third and she came home when the Tigers’ first baseman Joanne Loethen threw the ball into left field attempting to throw Yoachim out at third.
Both runs were unearned until sophomore Trisha Tannahill singled one batter later. Tannahill advanced to third on two wild pitches and scored Nebraska’s final run on an error by Masterson.
Missouri grabbed an early lead when A.J. White doubled home Sarah Stringer in the top of the first.
The Tigers added to their lead by plating three runs in the sixth inning. Stringer led off with a double and LeCluyse followed with a walk. Stringer scored on a throwing error by DeBuhr and LeCluyse and White came home on a two-run double by Alli Kennewell.
Nebraska was retired one-two-three in the ninth to end the game. Offensively, Steffan, Yoachim and Tannahill each had a hit and a run scored.
The Huskers conclude the regular season tomorrow at 1 p.m. against Missouri. Prior to first pitch, NU will recognize its four seniors, Peaches James, Liz Lawhorn, Nicole Trimboli and Brittney Yolo. The game can be heard locally on KKUL 105.3 or on the internet at Huskers.com.
