Big 12 Honors Seven Huskers

A school-record seven Nebraska women’s tennis players were named to the academic All-Big 12 Conference women’s tennis team announced by the league office this week. Five Huskers earned first-team honors, while two NU players were recognized on the second team. Nebraska’s seven selections were the most by any conference school.

The first-team honorees included seniors Leslie Harvey, Rebecca Harvey and Anna Oehme; junior Gitte Ostermann; and sophomore Jennifer Cremieux. Second-team members included junior Katie Garcia and sophomore Pamela Castillejos. Rebecca Harvey is a three-time first-team honoree, while Leslie Harvey has been named to the second team the past two seasons.

Oehme and Ostermann are making their second appearance on the academic teams, while 2004 marks the first year that Garcia and Cremieux have been honored.

Nominated by each institution’s director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the tennis academic all-league squads consisted of 49 first-team members combined with 12 on the second-team. First-team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better grade-point average, while the second-team members are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.

To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of her/his team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are eligible.
