Huskers Fall to No. 19 Oklahoma, 7-0

Norman, Okla. -- In its final regular-season match, the Nebraska women’s tennis team suffered a 7-0 loss to No. 19 Oklahoma Sunday afternoon at the Headington Family Tennis Center. The Huskers, who defeated Oklahoma State Saturday, finished the regular season with a 15-8 overall record and a 5-6 mark in the Big 12 Conference.

 

Nebraska ended the league season finished seventh in the Big 12 standings. NU will travel to Norman again Thursday, April 29 through Sunday, May 2, for the Big 12 Tournament. The Huskers’ match time and first-round opponent will be announced Monday.

 

Against the Sooners (20-3 overall and 9-2 in the Big 12), Nebraska struggled to find a rhythm. NU lost the doubles point, as the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles teams were defeated. The Huskers did receive a doubles win in the No. 2 spot, where juniors Gitte Ostermann and Katie Garcia defeated Jessica Braver and Irina Lykina, 8-1.

 

OU won five of the six singles matches in straight sets. Garcia battled Beth Griffin at No. 6 singles, but eventually fell, 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (7). At No. 1 singles, fifth-ranked Anda Perianu defeated Ostermann, 6-1, 6-0, to finish conference play with an 11-0 record.
