Trimboli Leads Huskers to 6-1 Win

Lubbock, Texas ? Senior Nicole Trimboli broke out of a mini-slump at the plate to lead the 15th-ranked Nebraska softball team to a 6-1 win over Texas Tech on Saturday at Rocky Johnson Field in Lubbock, Texas.

After going hitless in her last four games, Trimboli singled and scored the Huskers’ first run in the top of the first. In her next at bat, the Colorado Springs, Colo., native ripped a two-run double to the gap in left center to give NU the lead for good at 3-1. She then finished the scoring by belting a solo home run over the wall in center in the seventh.

Behind another strong outing by reigning Big 12 Pitcher of the Week, senior right-hander Peaches James, NU improved to 33-12 overall and 11-0 in the Big 12 Conference. James (27-5) tossed a complete-game one-hitter, striking out eight. Texas Tech (19-33, 1-14) dropped its 14th consecutive league game. Erin Crawford (8-12) took the loss, allowing three runs on six hits in 3.2 innings.

Trimboli, who hits third in the Huskers’ lineup and sophomore Trisha Tannahill the No. 4 hitter, each had big games against the Lady Raiders after combining to go 1-for-20 in four games last week. Trimboli finished the game 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs, while Tannahill also went 3-for-4 with an RBI.

Nebraska extended its lead to 4-1 in the sixth inning. James started the inning with a double off the wall in left center and junior Jocelyn Evans followed with an RBI single to left.

Sophomore Jessica Yoachim, the second-leading hitter in the Big 12 Conference in league games, continued to produce at the plate. The Arkansas City, Kan., native extended her hitting streak to five games and recorded her third straight multi-hit game with a 2-for-4 day.

The two teams will wrap up the series tomorrow, with first pitch set for 11 a.m.
