Huskers Conclude Spring with 1-1 Tie

Lincoln? The Nebraska soccer team concluded its spring season with a 1-1 tie against the Canadian Under-19 National Team Friday night at the Abbott Sports Complex.

"I thought it was a good contest," Walker said. "It was great end to end. It was good for us to see a different style of play, but for the most part, it was a physical, hard playing match."

Nikki Baker scored the Huskers' lone goal on an assist from Jenna Cooper at the 63:22 mark. Cooper sent the ball up the left side and Baker went one-on-one with her defender, gaining the advantage and getting past the goalkeeper to score the game-tying goal.

"Jenna just gave me a great ball," Baker said. "She placed it right where it needed to be at my feet."

Canada jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Justine Labrecque scored on of an assist from Veronique Maranda at the 25:49 mark in the first half.

NU had its first strong scoring opportunity early in the second half, as Brooke Bredenberg received a pass from Lindsay Ingram and scored, but the official ruled the Bredenberg was just ahead of the Canadian defense and was called for being offside.

With the score tied at one, the Huskers had one of their best opportunities to take the lead, as Ashley Tenn sent a shot from 40 yards out before Canada goalkeeper Stephanie Labbe punched the ball out as she was falling backwards to preserve the score. Labbe recorded five saves on the night.

Canada had its opportunities to score as well but NU goalkeeper Katie Wright played well, recording five saves in the contest . The Huskers also recorded two team saves.

Canada outshot the Huskers, 13-11, while recording an eight to six edge in shots on goal. The Huskers finished the spring with a 3-2-2 mark.
