Seward, Neb. ? Becky Breisch unleashed another mammoth throw in the shot put Wednesday in the Concorida Invitational to seize the NCAA’s top mark this season to lead the Nebraska track and field team.
Breisch launched a mark of 57-5, to overtake Stanford’s Jillian Camarena’s previous nation-leading mark of 57-4 ?. The Edwardsburg, Mich., native defeated the field by more than seven feet.
Breisch opened the meet by coming extremely close to breaking her own school record in the discus with a throw of 192-6. With that toss, Breisch now holds the top three marks in the NCAA this season in the discus to go along with her now nation-leading mark in the shot put.
Jennifer Steiner took second to Breisch in both events, notching throws of 49-10 ? in the shot put and 143-6 in the discus.
Senior Na’Tassia Vice recorded a season-best and NCAA Regional-qualifying mark of 5-8 in the women’s high jump to win the event. Teammate Ashlee Dickinson took second, clearing 5-6.
The Husker women’s 4x100-meter relay dominated the field, clocking a time of 47.14 for the victory. Freshman Kayla Wilkinson won the women’s javelin throw with a mark of 130-5.
Oliver Williams Jr. won the men’s 100-meter dash in a hand-timed 10.4 seconds. Shelldon Simpson took third in 10.8.
Paul Wilson dropped more than 15 seconds off his season-best time for a 9:22.19 clocking to win the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase. Kyle Doperalski took more than 19 seconds off of his steeplechase time, for a mark of 9:28.13 for a second-place finish.
Aaron Plas won the men’s high jump with a leap of 6-11 and Yoav Shuster was third with a mark of 6-9. Issar Yazhbin won silver in the men’s hammer throw with a mark of 184-8.
The Huskers travel to Wichita, Kan., to compete in the K.T. Woodman Classic on Saturday, before playing host to their only outdoor home meet of the season Saturday, April 17, with the Nebraska Quadrangular.
