Huskers Improve on Day Two of Tournament

Boerne, Texas ?After struggling on day one of the Baylor-Tapatio Springs Shootout, the Nebraska women’s golf team improved in the second round of action Saturday afternoon, dropping four strokes from the team’s first-round score. The Huskers remained in 11th place after two days of competition, firing a second-round score of 315.

"We played a little bit better today," Head Coach Robin Krapfl said, "but we still really didn’t move up at all. It’s coming around though."

Overall, five of the Huskers’ eight golfers lowered their scores in Saturday’s round. Junior Merynn Ito (Aiea, Hawaii) dropped four strokes from her opening-round score with a 77, jumping 16 spots to tie for 42nd place.

Senior Stephanie Schaefer (Columbus, Neb.) leads the Huskers and is tied for 36th place. In the second round, the senior knocked three strokes off of her first round tally to post a five over par-77 for a two-round score of 157.

According to Krapfl, the Huskers look to hurdle a few holes that have been problems in the tournament in Sunday’s final round.

"We need to put a good showing on the board tomorrow," Krapfl said. "Again, a couple holes just really cost us a lot of strokes. We need to eliminate those if we are going to start scoring lower."

Indiana leads the team competition with a two-round total of 591. The Hoosiers ascended from fourth to first place on Saturday, and holds a 10-stroke lead over second place Texas Tech (296-305-601).

The final round of the Baylor-Tapatio Spring Shootout is scheduled for Sunday, March 21, with a shotgun start of 7:30 a.m. central time.
