Notre Dame Rallies to Upset NU

Las Vegas ? Notre Dame used a four-run seventh inning to pull off a 6-4, come-from-behind upset of No. 8 Nebraska Saturday night at the 2004 UNLV Classic. With the loss, the Huskers fell to 2-2 on the season. Nebraska, who defeated No. 10 Michigan, 5-4, Saturday afternoon, concludes tournament action Sunday when it faces Oregon State at noon.

Nebraska led, 4-2, after six innings, but crumbled in the top of the seventh. Notre Dame’s Stephanie Brown and Liz Hartmann both jacked two-run home runs over the left field fence to give the Fighting Irish their first lead of the game.

Freshman right-hander Ashley DeBuhr (0-1) held Notre Dame scoreless for five innings before allowing two runs in the top of the sixth and four in the seventh. She finished the night the six runs on 12 hits, striking out three to take the loss.

Carrie Wisen was the winning pitcher in relief, allowing one run on one hit in 2.2 innings. Heather Booth started the game for Notre Dame, allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits and striking out five Huskers in 4.1 innings of work.

After leaving runners on in the first and second innings, Nebraska finally got on the board with a two-run fourth inning. With two outs and Trisha Tannahill on second, Jamie Waldecker, pinch hitting for Jessica Yoachim, laced a shot to left field for an RBI single. Yoachim re-entered the game to run for Waldecker and stole second. Yoachim then beat out a throw to home after Liz Lawhorn ripped an RBI single to left, giving Nebraska a 2-0 advantage.

In the bottom of the fifth, Booth walked the bases loaded with one out, bringing up Brittney Yolo. The senior catcher singled to center. Sheena Lawrick scored, but Peaches James was thrown out at home as she tried to add another run for NU. Tannahill was then picked off at third to end the inning.

Nebraska led 3-0 after five innings before Notre Dame threatened to take control in the top of the sixth. Jjunior third baseman Liz Hartmann sent a two-run homer over center, bringing the Fighting Irish within one run. Kellie Middleton then singled up the middle and advanced to second on an error. After DeBuhr walked Nicole deFau, she struck out Wisen to end the scoring threat.

NU found some breathing room in the bottom of the sixth. With the bases loaded and one out, Steffan grounded out to first, scoring Yoachim for a 4-2 Nebraska lead.
