Huskers Finish Seventh at 49er Collegiate Classic

Nebraska posted its third consecutive team score of better than 300 at the 49er Collegiate Classic with a 294 on Tuesday, but was unable to make a move up the leaderboard. The Huskers finished seventh in the 12-team tournament as scores throughout the field were again low in the final round.

 

The Huskers posted a season-low round of 284 in Monday's second round and responded with another solid round on Tuesday at 294, but saw six schools post lower scores, including a 279 by team champion Indiana. The Huskers' three-round total of 874, left it three shots behind Campbell who finished in sixth place and 32 strokes behind Indiana, who completed three rounds with a 22-under-par total of 842.

 

Nebraska was led in the final round by redshirt freshman Drew Reynolds who posted a two-under par 70. Reynolds rebounded from a tough first day, when he carded rounds of 80 and 76. Reynolds finished the tournament in a tie for 46th place after Tuesday's strong round.

 

Senior J.J. Sullivan continued to be Nebraska's most consistent player, finishing three rounds at one-over par 217 after a 75 on Tuesday. Sullivan finished in a tie for 16th place, marking the second straight top-20 finish for the Omaha Gross product. Sophomore Judd Cornell finished in 21st place after a final-round 76 left him at 218, while freshman Brady Schnell (75, 222) finished in a tie for 36th and senior Chris Hartwig (74, 223) rounded out the NU lineup with a 40th-place showing. Indiana's Jeff Overton capped a runaway tournament victory with a 68 on Tuesday for a three round total of 17-under-par 199, good for a nine-shot victory over three other golfers.

 

Nebraska takes next week off before completing its fall season on Oct. 20-21 at the Squire Creek Invitational, hosted by Louisiana Tech University.
