Fairbanks, Alaska - The Nebraska women’s rifle team dropped to 2-2 on the season after losing to defending national champion Alaska-Fairbanks, 6,274-6,158, late Sunday.
Sophomore Misty Chanek was the top NU finisher for the second time this weekend, earning a tie for sixth in the smallbore competition and a tie for fifth in the air rifle competition, with 1,161 points and 390 points, respectively. Chanek’s aggregate score of 1,551 earned her sixth overall among 15 competitors. Alaska-Fairbanks’ Matt Wallace won the overall individual title with an aggregate score of 1,575.
In the smallbore competition, Alaska-Fairbanks defeated the Huskers, 4,703-4,606. Wallace placed first in the competition with 1,182 points for the Nanooks, while NU was led by Chanek, who tied for sixth. Freshman Kristina Fehlings placed seventh with 1,158 points, while senior Melissa Downsbrough earned eighth place with 1,151 points. Sophomore Stacy Underwood rounded out Nebraska’s team score, finishing 11th with 1,136 points.
Three Huskers also competed unattached in the event. Freshman Sarah Quinn finished tied for 12th with 1,135 points, junior Laura Johnson also finished 12th with 1,135 points and senior Karen Aspden totaled 1,133 points to finish 14th.
In the air rifle competition, Alaska-Fairbanks defeated NU, 1,571-1,552. Jamie Beyerle won the competition for Alaska-Fairbanks, finishing with 396 points. Chanek was the top Husker shooter, finishing with 390 points, to tie for fifth. Fehlings finished in a tie for seventh with 389 points, while Downsbrough took ninth with 388 points. Johnson rounded out the Huskers’ team score, tying for 12th with 385 points.
Aspden, Quinn and Underwood competed unattached for NU in the air rifle competition. Quinn’s total of 386 points earned her 11th place. Underwood finished in a tie for 12th with 385 points and Aspden tied for 14th place, finishing with 377 points.
The Huskers will be off for nearly a month before returning to competition on Saturday, Nov. 22, at the Wash Invitational in Cincinnati, Ohio.
