Palm Harbor, Fla. - The Nebraska women’s golf team fired an opening-round 302 to sit in third place at the 14-team adidas Fall Classic in Palm Harbor, Fla., on Sunday.
The Huskers finished the first round at 14-over par on the 5,844-yard, par 72 Lansbrook Golf Course to end the day just eight strokes off the lead.
Nebraska Coach Robin Krapfl said the Huskers produced a strong opening round and were in a good position heading into Monday’s second round.
"We played a pretty solid opening round. We didn’t have anybody go really low, but we just got solid rounds from Merynn Ito, Chrissie McArdle, Jackie Beste and Steph Schaefer," Krapfl said. "We’re in decent position only eight shots out of first, so we are looking forward to tomorrow."
Sophomore Jackie Beste played her best nine holes of the fall during Sunday’s back nine, sinking four birdies to produce a three-under-par 33 on the back. Beste’s sizzling back nine saved a 42 on the front nine to give her a three-over-par 75 on the day.
Junior Merynn Ito and true freshman Christine McArdle matched Beste’s 75 in the opening round, while senior captain Stephanie Schaefer added a 77 to round out Nebraska’s top four.
Monday’s second round is scheduled to tee off at 6:30 a.m. central time, while Tuesday’s final round of the 54-hole tournament is also set to begin at 6:30 a.m.
