Huskers Successful in First Day of Drake Tournament

Five Nebraska women’s tennis players competed for the first time this fall Friday at the Lloyd Stokstad Invitational hosted by Drake, and three Huskers advanced to the semifinals of their respective flights.

 

NU was led by seniors Anna Oehme, Rebecca Harvey and Rose Ketmayura, who all posted a 2-0 record on the first day of competition. Oehme defeated Athanasia Giannoulpoulou of Illinois-Chicago, 6-1, 6-2, before downing Jill Palen of Iowa State, 6-3, 6-4. Oehme will face ColoradoState’s Jasmin Singh at 2 p.m. Saturday in the semifinals of the White Flight Singles.

 

Harvey will face Jessica Jones of ColoradoState at 2 p.m. Saturday in the other semifinal match of the White Flight Singles. Harvey defeated IowaState’s Beth Chermel, 6-4, 6-1, and Drake’s Cheen Alknatib, 6-3, 6-4.

 

Ketmayura easily reached the semifinals of the Grey Flight with wins over IowaState’s Charlotte Ljungkrantz (6-0, 6-2) and Drake’s Julie Felsecker (6-0, 6-1). Ketmayura will take on Alexandra Paganetti of ColoradoState at 2 p.m. Saturday.

 

Other Huskers competing at Drake included sophomore Milena Schulz-Gartner and senior Leslie Harvey, who both dropped their first-round matches. Schulz-Gartner will face Jamie Noyce at 11 a.m. tomorrow in the Blue Flight consolation bracket. Harvey will take on Illinois-Chicago’s Iris Jaklin at 11 a.m. in the Blue Flight consolation bracket.

 

The Husker doubles teams of Schulz-Gartner and Oehme, and Harvey and Ketmayura were both victorious on the first day of play in the Bull Flight and will compete in semifinal matches tomorrow at 9 a.m.
