Huskers End Action at Wisconsin Fall Invite

Madison, Wis. --- The Nebraska men's tennis team completed play in the third and final day of the Wisconsin Fall Invite Sunday, facing off against Iowa in singles action and Minnesota in doubles play at the Nielsen Tennis Center. Nebraska dropped both doubles matches against the Golden Gophers, but picked up a 3-3 split in singles play against Iowa.

The Nebraska trio of juniors Joel Reckewey and Jose Rivera and freshman Justin Junck continued their solid play, picking up the Huskers' three singles victories. Rivera, who went 4-1 this weekend in singles action, cruised past Iowa's Johny Hoak, 6-2, 6-4, at the No. 4 slot, while Reckewey dominated action against Walter Valanezo to win in the No. 3 slot, 6-1, 6-2. Junck also shined, coming back from a second-set defeat to take a 6-4, 3-6, 10-5, victory over the Hawkeyes' Ryan Reid.

Sophomore Tanner Gates dropped his match at the No. 6 spot, but did not go down easy. The transfer from Watertown, S.D., battled through the first set before dropping a 7-6 thriller in the tie-breaker, 17-15, to Iowa's Aaron Schaechterle. Schaechterle then came back for a 6-3 victory in the second set to take the match. Senior Jeff Nabity and sophomore Joerg Barthel also dropped singles matches to the Hawkeyes, with Barthel retiring the first set trailing 3-0, while Nabity was taken out in two sets, 6-4, 6-2, by Chaitu Malempati.

In doubles play, the Huskers were unable to get on track, with Reckewey and Nabity falling 8-3 to Clay Estes and Brian Lipinski, while Junck and Gates dropped a tightly contested 8-5 contest to Avery Ticer and Chris Wettengel.
