Madison, Wis. --- The Nebraska men's tennis team continued its steady improvement Saturday when it took on Wisconsin, Marquette and Iowa at the Nielsen Tennis Center in the second day of the Wisconsin Fall Invite. Nebraska defeated Iowa, 2-1, while playing three doubles matches, and ran past Marquette, 5-1, in six singles contests. The Huskers fell to the host Badgers, 3-1, in singles action.
Junior Jose Rivera again led the Huskers, as he went 3-0 on the day. He was the only Husker to win both of his singles matches, and also teamed with Joerg Barthel at the No. 1 doubles spot for a win over Iowa's Parker Ross and Walter Valanezo, 8-6. Rivera ran his team-high fall singles mark to 8-4 with wins over Wisconsin's Alex Conti at the No. 2 slot, 6-7, 6-2, 10-5, and Marquette's Creighton Macy, 6-3, 6-1.
Barthel also had a solid performance, winning his doubles match with Rivera before pulling out a 6-2, 6-1, victory over Marquette's Eigintas Verdrickas. It was Barthel's first singles match since being sidelined with an injury in the first tournament of the fall.
A pair of newcomers also added wins for the Huskers, as freshman Justin Junck extended the hot start to his collegiate career with a come-from-behind singles victory over Marquette's Ricky Servoss, 6-3, 2-6, 10-7. Junck and sophomore transfer Tanner Gates provided an 8-5 doubles win at the No. 3 position against Iowa's Aaron Schaecterle and Ryan Reid. Gates was also successful in singles play, taking his match at No. 6 singles against Tomek Czernuszewicz of Marquette, 6-3, 6-3.
