Huskers in Seventh at the Legends

Franklin, Ind. - The Nebraska women's golf team produced low scores with rounds of 302 and 298, but the Huskers still find themselves in seventh place, 22 strokes off the lead after Monday's action in the 18-team Shootout at the Legends in Franklin, Ind.

Nebraska fired its second-lowest round of the year with its second-round score of  298 to finish the first day of competition with a total of 600. However, back-to-back rounds of 289 by Kent State put the Golden Flashes in front with a score of 578. Indiana sits in second after producing the lowest round of the day with a 288 in the second round, which followed on the heels of a 298 in the first round to end the day at 586.

The Huskers, who are coming off back-to-back tournament titles with wins at the Chip-N Club Invitational (Sept. 15-16) and the Ron Moore Highlands Ranch Invitational (Sept. 29-30), actually produced their best score through two rounds in any tournament this season, surpassing the 604 NU fired at the Chip-N Club.

Nebraska Coach Robin Krapfl said her team played solid golf, but needed to take greater advantage of the scoring conditions on Monday.

"The conditions were just ideal for scoring. We hit a lot of good shots and just didn't make a lot of puts," Krapfl said. "On a day like today, we can't be satisfied with shooting our usual consistent scores. We need to go after some really low numbers."

Although the Huskers sit in seventh place heading into Tuesday's final round, Krapfl said Nebraska still considered itself in the hunt.

"We're 22 shots out of first, so we have our work cut out for us if we want to get our third title," Krapfl said. "We can definitely shoot an excellent number tomorrow if we come out firing at pins and put the ball in the hole."

Senior Stephanie Schaefer notched Nebraska's lowest round of the day with a one-under-par 71 on the 6,207-yard par 72 layout at the Legends of Indiana Golf Club. Schaefer's low round followed an opening-round 77 to put her in a tie for 21st at 148. Junior Merynn Ito (76-74-150) and sophomore Jackie Beste (74-76-150) continued their consistent play by tying for 28th heading into the final day of competition. Junior Stephanie Ruiz (76-77-153) enters the final round in a tie for 41st, while junior Sara Sackett (76-81-157) is tied for 58th among the 93 individuals in the tournament.

The tournament concludes with 18 holes on Tuesday with the first tee time set for 9 a.m.
