Lincoln - The Nebraska women's golf team fired a 307 to sit in a tie for first place with Kansas State after the opening round of the Chip-N Club Invitational at Wilderness Ridge Golf Club on Monday afternoon. The Huskers and Wildcats are one stroke ahead of Denver (308), and six strokes up on Illinois State and Iowa State, which are tied in fourth place at 313.
Iowa State's Louise Kenney owns the lead after the first round after putting together a 1-under-par 71 on the first 18 holes. Kenney shot a 37 on the front nine, before shooting a sterling 34 on the back nine. Nebraska junior Merynn Ito sits just one stroke back of Kenney in second place after firing an even-par 72 with 36s on the front and back nine.
Nebraska senior captain Stephanie Schaefer joined Ito in the top 10 individually after producing an opening-round 77. Sophomore Jackie Beste is one stroke behind Schaefer in a tie for 15th after shooting a 78, while Stephanie Ruiz managed an 80 to find herself in a tie for 24th place. Nebraska's fifth player on its Red squad, Sara Sackett, added an 82, which was good for a tie for 34th.
The Husker White squad heads into the second round in 11th place after shooting 337 over the first 18 holes. Freshman Andrea Dunagan led the Whites with an 81 to put herself in a tie for 32nd. Beth Anne Cherry and Julie Harder both shot 85s to tie for 45th, while Chelsea Gehring added an 86 to tie for 49th. Madison Schroeder rounded out the Husker White contingent with an 87 to sit in a tie for 53rd.
Husker freshman Christine McArdle, who was scratched from the Nebraska "Red" lineup after suffering from neck pain over the weekend, played several holes before withdrawing from individual action.
The second round of the 54-hole tournament got underway shortly after 2 p.m., and second round results are expected to be posted by 9 p.m. The tournament concludes tomorrow with the final 18 holes set to tee off at 8 a.m.
