Lincoln - The Nebraska football team ran through their first major scrimmage of the spring by going head-to-head for 72 plays on the FieldTurf at Memorial Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
With temperatures pushing into the mid-90s, the Huskers not only had to battle each other but also the steamy playing conditions on the field.
"I like the fact that the conditions were as demanding as they were today," Coach Frank Solich said. "With their legs being tired because of the heat, they still gave great effort throughout the practice."
Senior quarterback Jammal Lord played well throughout the scrimmage, leading the top offensive unit to a pair of touchdowns on its first two drives. Lord completed all three of his passes on the two scoring drives. Lord hooked up twice with sophomore wide receiver Ross Pilkington, including a 48-yard strike to open the Huskers' second scoring drive. For the scrimmage, Lord completed 4-of-8 passes for 83 yards. Lord added 22 rushing yards on four carries, despite sporting a green jersey throughout the scrimmage.
"Jammal operated well, but was limited running because of the green jersey," Solich said. "He threw very well and made plays for us."
Lord's performance came just hours after receiving his bachelor's degree in communications. Lord was joined by teammates Chad Buller, Jerrell Pippens and Pat Ricketts at the graduation ceremonies at the Bob Devaney Sports Center on Saturday morning.
Senior I-back Josh Davis capped both scoring drives with touchdown runs, including a two-yard plunge on the first drive and a four-yard run on the second drive. Davis, who led all rushers with 11 carries for 56 yards, sparked an NU ground attack that churned out 177 yards on 49 carries on the afternoon.
Sophomore I-back David Horne added 38 yards on just six carries, while freshman quarterback Joe Dailey contributed seven carries for 34 yards despite wearing the protective green jersey. Dailey also completed 3-of-4 passes for 12 yards on the day. Mike Stuntz completed 4-of-8 passes for 26 yards, as NU's three quarterbacks combined for 121 yards through air on 11-of-20 passing without throwing an interception.
Pilkington led a quartet of receivers who each hauled in two receptions. Pilkington finished with 59 yards receiving, while freshman wide receiver Andy Birkel (20 yards), redshirt freshman Isaiah Fluellen (16 yards) and sophomore I-back Cory Ross (13 yards) all added a pair of receptions.
The Huskers will continue fall workouts with one practice on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. NU will hold two practices on Monday at 7:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
