Lincoln, Neb. -Redshirt freshman Jacob Klein became the third NU wrestler this season to earn Big 12 Wrestler of the Week honors, capturing the award for the week of Feb. 17-23, the league office in Dallas announced Monday.
Klein recorded a pair of victories against Air Force and Hofstra last Saturday. Against Air Force, Klein won by technical fall over Blaine Brown, 17-0. Against Hofstra, Klein upset set three-time NCAA qualifier and 10th-ranked Noel Thompson, 5-1.
With his two wins this weekend, Klein improved to 20-9 overall and 17-6 in duals. The 17 dual wins places him in a tie for ninth-place all-time on NU season dual victory list.
The Huskers finished the regular season 16-7 overall, their most dual wins since NU recorded 17 in 1998-99. The season marks only the 11th time in school history the Huskers have recorded 15 or more wins.
Husker sophomores Travis Shufelt and Justin Ruiz were the first two Huskers to earn this honor. Shufelt won for his performance at the 2003 Virginia Duals on Jan. 10-11, while Ruiz won for his performances during the week of Feb. 3-9.
Klein and Nebraska return to action on Saturday, March 8 at the Big 12 Championships in Columbia, Mo.
