Lincoln, Neb. - The Nebraska men's and women's track and field teams both captured team titles at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational Saturday at the Bob Devaney Sports Center Track in front of 1,587 fans.
The women won with 224.50 points followed by Brigham Young (138) and Texas Tech (65), and the men captured the crown with 211 points followed by Texas Tech (91) and Brigham Young (76).
"I'm really happy with the team effort," head coach Gary Pepin said. "We had a lot of really good performances, and we still have some athletes that we know can run better than what they are doing right now. Overall, it was a very good meet for everyone."
Ineta Radevica and Carl Myerscough both captured the 2003 Husker Invitational Most Valuable Performer awards after outstanding performances on the day for the Huskers.
Radevica won the women's long jump with a season best and provisional qualifying mark of 20 feet 9 inches. She turned around to win the triple jump with her second automatic-qualifying mark of the season leaping 43-7.
Myerscough tied the best mark in the country with a winning throw of 68-5 on his second attempt of the evening. The junior threw his second NCAA automatic qualifying mark of the season in just his second week of competition.
Leann Boerema had an unbelievable outing for the Huskers, getting her first automatic-qualifying mark and winning the shot put with a launch of 54-4, which was the third best throw in NU school history. Becky Breisch finished in second in the shot put with a throw of 51-1 3/4.
Senior Shelley-Ann Brown continued her stellar season, taking titles in the 60-meter hurdles (8.32) and the 60-meter dash (7.49), both in provisional qualifying times. She also ran as the third leg on the women's 4x400-meter relay that finished second in a time of 3:43.46.
Frank Tolen made his mark in just his second meet of the season, taking the crown in the men's long jump with a personal-best jump and provisional qualifying mark of 25-3 1/4.
Freshman Aaron Plas had another outstanding outing in the high jump, making is first seven-feet jump of the season. Plas took second place, making it to a height of 7-0 1/4.
The men and women pole vaulters had another successful meet, with Eric Eshbach and Brad Teeple finishing in first and second with provisional qualifying marks. Eshbach won the event with a season-best vault of 17-8 1/2, while Teeple went 17-5. Christi Lehman won her third title of the season with a mark of 13-0 1/4.
David Davis Jr. won his second meet of the season in just his second week of competition in a time of 7.77 in the 60-meter hurdles.
In a race that had to be broken down to the one-thousandth of a second, Oliver Williams (6.835) nudged out fellow Husker Shelldon Simpson (6.840) in the 60-meter dash.
Other event winners in the scarlet and cream included Amanda Moreley (weight throw), James Bowler (mile), Danny Hill (600-yard run), and Na'Tassia Vice (high jump).
The Huskers will compete at the KSU Invite in Manhattan, Kan., Saturday, Feb. 22, before returning home to host the Big 12 Indoor Championships, Feb. 28-March 1, at the Bob Devaney Sports Center Track. For tickets to the Big 12 Championships call 1-800-8-BIGRED.
