Huskers Fall in Region V Men's Tennis Championships

Tulsa, Okla. —— The Husker duo of Jeff Nabity and Jacek Wolicki fell in the round of 16 in doubles play to end the third day of the Region V Championships for the Nebraska tennis team at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center at the University of Tulsa on Saturday. Nabity and Wolicki fell to Anthony Perkins and Kirk Schuler of Drake, 8-4. The pair reached the round of 16 by defeating Angelo Manns and Jamie Rodriguez of Wichita State, 8-5, in Friday’s late action.

Also late Friday, Cesar Vargas fell in the round of 32 main draw singles, the only Husker to reach the second round at the championships. Vargas, who won two matches in the qualifying round on Thursday, fell to Lovre Brajkovic of Indiana State, 6-3, 6-0.

Other Husker competitors in singles action on Friday included Nabity, Wolicki, Joel Reckewey and D.J. Gaetz. Reckewey defeated Steve Timperley of host Tulsa in a come-from-behind 6-7, 6-2, 6-3 victory, while Nabity, Wolicki and Gaetz fell in straight sets in the round of 64 main draw. Nabity was tripped up by Jason Smit of Illinois State, 6-2, 6-1, and Wolicki fell to Jack Frankowicz of Drake in a tough 6-4, 7-6 match. Gaetz, a freshman, dropped a 6-3, 6-0 decision to Pavel Hanek of Southwest Missouri State.

In doubles action Friday, Gaetz and Jose Rivera fell to Eduardo Pacheco and Matt Roberts of Arkansas, 8-4, while Ryan Jay and Vargas fell to Tommy Garrison and Chris Mitchell of Oklahoma in a dramatic 9-7 decision.

Nebraska will next compete in the University of Oregon Invitational on Nov. 1-3 to complete the fall season. The Huskers open the spring campaign on Jan. 17-19 at the Rice Invitational in Houston.
