Baton Rouge, La. - After an afternoon thunderstorm delayed the start of the second day of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships five Huskers competed in various track and field events.
Junior Artur Wszelaki of Poland placed third in the javelin throw with a seasonal best mark of 243-4.
"There were a lot of good guys out there competing, it would have been nice to have thrown a little further," said Wszelaki. "I set my personal best two years ago and I'm still trying to improve upon that mark of 246-3."
In running events both Huskers competing in the preliminaries of the hurdles earned their way into tomorrow's semifinals. Senior Derek Zachary ran the 10th fastest time overall in the 110-meter hurdles and will advance with a mark of 13.72. In the 100-meter hurdles junior Shelley-Ann Brown will continue to tomorrow's semifinals with a personal best time of 13.39. England's native Lesley Owusu will advance to the finals on Saturday in the 400-meter dash with a time of 52.55.
"I didn't get a very good push off the blocks like I usually do," said Owusu.
But I felt good going down the straightaway and I'm fairly pleased with my time. It's a definite confidence booster to be able to make it into the finals."
Fellow English teammate junior James Bowler competed in the final middle distance preliminary of the day running for a time of 3:45.40 in the 1,500-meter run. Bowler placed seventh in his heat, but did not qualify for the finals.
