Lincoln -- The 65th-ranked Nebraska women's tennis team lost a hard fought battle to 33rd-ranked Kansas, Sunday afternoon at the Cather Pound Courts. The loss drops Nebraska to 13-7 on the season and 3-7 in the Big 12 conference.
Nebraska started off strong winning the doubles point. At the No. 1 Katarina Balan and Gitte Ostermann defeated Courtney and Kristen Steinbock, 8-5. No. 2 Rose Ketmayura and Anne Oehme dropped their decision to Emily Haylock and Paige Brown, 8-4. No. 3 Leslie Harvey and Amy Frisch defeated Cheryl Mallaiah and Aurelie Bejar , 8-4 of Kansas to earn the point.
In singles action, Kansas took five of the match. Senior Balan, who defeated Haylock, 6-3, 5-7, 7-5 at the No. 2 spot, led the Huskers. No.1 Ostermann dropped her match to Mallaiah, 6-3, 6-1. No. 3 Harvey suffered a loss to C. Steinbock, x-x. No. 4 Frisch fell in defeat to Brown, 7-6, 6-4. Rebecca Harvey and Ketmayura also suffered defeats.
Nebraska returns to action, next Saturday, April 20 against 43rd-ranked Kansas State at the Cather Pound Courts. Doubles matches begin at 10 a.m.
