Lincoln -- The Creighton Bluejays were no match for the Husker men's tennis team, who defeated its in-state rival, 6-1, today.
Nebraska swept the doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead heading into singles play. At the No. 1 position, Lance Mills and Jose Rivera defeated Oliver Floth and Pierre-Marc Villeneuve, 9-7. Sophomore Ryan Jay, who made his first starting appearance for the Huskers, teamed up with Joel Reckewey at the No. 2 spot. The duo routed Kevin Otto and Jesse Plote, 9-8, in a tiebreaker. Fungai Tongoona and Jose Hernan improved their doubles record to 7-2 with an 8-6 win over Tom McCarthy and Ryan Polito at the No. 3 spot.
In singles action, Mills, Hernan, Tongoona, Reckewey and Jeff Nabity all won their matches. Mills defeated Floth, 6-0, 6-1, at the No. 1 position. Hernan faced Villeneuve at the No. 2 spot. Tied at 6-6, Hernan was ahead of Villeneuve, 5-1, in the tiebreaker before Villeneuve retired due to injury. Tongoona split sets with Plote, 7-6, 5-7, before Tongoona won in a third-set tiebreaker, 10-7. Reckewey and Nabity both took straight sets in their matches. Reckewey defeated McCarthy, 6-4, 6-4, while Nabity overpowered Polito, 6-3, 6-3. Rivera had the sole loss for the Huskers, falling to Otto in a third-set tiebreaker, 6-7, 5-7, 10-4.
The Huskers improve their record to 5-4 on the season and 0-1 in the Big 12. Nebraska will be in action on Saturday, March 9 at 7:30 p.m. against No. 57 Oklahoma State.
