Huskers Upend Pilots, 4-3; Win Streak Extended to Six

Oxnard, Calif. -- The Husker men's tennis team defeated the Portland Pilots Sunday, 4-3, at the Moranda Tennis Complex in Oxnard, Calif. The Huskers took their second straight 4-3 victory while extending their winning streak to six games. The Huskers are now 7-4 on the season and 1-1 in the Big 12. Portland fell to 8-7.

Portland got off to an early start, taking the doubles point with two victories. Travis Parrott and Nick Tostenrude defeated Jacek Wolicki and Joel Reckewey at the No. 1 position, 8-2. Lance Mills and Jose Rivera fell to Quinn Borchard and Peter Malacek, 8-2, at the No. 2 spot. Fungai Tongoona and Jose Hernan pulled out the only doubles victory for the Huskers with a 8-5 win over Ty Garrison and Spencer Straub at the No. 3 position. Tongoona and Hernan are now 8-3 on the season and are 8-2 at the No. 3 spot.

All of Nebraska's points came in singles play. Hernan, Tongoona, Reckewey and Rivera were all victorious to give the Huskers the 4-3 win. Hernan defeated Tostenrude, 6-3, 6-2, at the No. 3 spot. Reckewey took the No. 5 position, with a win over Straub, 6-4,6-4, while Rivera defeated Ram Hernandez at the No. 6 position, 6-4, 7-6.

For the second straight time, the Huskers' victory came down to one decisive match. Rivera took a nail-biting win last week against Oklahoma State to give the Huskers the victory, this week it was Tongoona. Playing in the No. 4 position, Tongoona and Borchard split the first two sets, 6-3, 7-5. Tongoona dominated the third set, however, taking a 6-2 win over Borchard. The final score was 6-3, 5-7, 6-2.

Mills lost to No. 35 Parrott at the No. 1 position, 1-6, 3-6, while Wolicki fell to No. 102, Malacek, 6-7, 2-6.

The Huskers return to action Wednesday, March 20 against Dartmouth. The matches will be played at noon at the Balboa Beach Tennis Complex in Newport Beach, Calif.
