Lincoln -- The Husker men's tennis team upset the No. 57 ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys Saturday night, 4-3.
In doubles play, Lance Mills and Jose Rivera swept their match with Mike McCarty and Loren Collins, 8-0, at the No. 2 position. Jacek Wolicki and Joel Reckewey fell to Matt Prentice and Fran Krepelka at the No. 1 spot, 4-8, while Fungai Tongoona and Jose Hernan lost to Jiri Jezek and Angel Diankov, 4-8, at the No. 3 position.
Nebraska scored all four points in singles action with wins from Mills, Hernan, Reckewey and Rivera. Mills, playing at the No. 1 position, came back from a 5-3 deficit to defeat Prentice, 7-5, 6-4. Hernan took straight sets from Jezek, 6-3, 6-0, at the No. 3 position. Reckewey and Rivera both took their matches into tiebreakers. Reckewey, at the No. 5 spot, took the first set, 6-1, before upending McCarty in a second-set tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-5).
Rivera split sets with Collins at the No. 6 position, 4-6, 6-1, to go into a third set. Rivera, who was up 5-4, lost two games to make the score, 5-6, but came back to even it up at 6-6. In the tiebreaker, Rivera and Collins kept trading leads until Rivera made the score 5-5. Collins had an unforced error to increase Rivera's lead to 6-5. Rivera took the match when Collins hit another unforced error. The final score was 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-5).
Nebraska has now defeated two ranked schools this season: No. 73 Texas-Arlington (4-3) and No. 57 Oklahoma State (4-3). With the win, the Huskers improved to 6-4 on the season and 1-1 in the Big 12, while Oklahoma State fell to 1-2 on the season and 0-1 in the Big 12.
The Huskers will next be in action March 17 vs. Portland. The match will begin at 3 p.m. in Los Angeles, Calif.
