NU Defeats No. 73 Texas-Arlington for First Win of Season

Arlington, Texas. - The Nebraska men's tennis team claimed their first win of the spring season, Saturday against No. 73 Texas-Arlington. The Huskers improve to 1-3 on the season, while the Mavericks are now 3-4.

In singles play, Jacek Wolicki and Jose Hernan swept their matches. Wolicki defeated David Corrie, 6-4, 6-2, in the No. 2 position. Hernan topped Tom Zarzaczny, 6-2, 6-4, at the No. 3 spot. Hernan is now 4-0 in dual matches and has not lost a set in any of the four matches. Fungai Tongoona gave the Huskers their third singles point, defeating Alon Goldshuv at the No. 4 position, 6-7, 6-4, 6-2.

Lance Mills, Jose Rivera and Joel Reckewey all fell in their singles matches. Mills lost to No. 3 Andy Leber, 4-6, 6-1, 4-6, in the No. 1 spot. Rivera lost to Javier Carrillo at the No. 5 spot, 4-6, 0-6, and Reckewey fell to James Young in the No. 6 position, 4-6, 6-4, 4-6.

The Huskers also scored their first doubles point of the dual season against the Mavericks. At the No. 2 spot, Mills and Rivera defeated Goldshuv/Young, 8-4, and Tongoona and Hernan defeated Carrillo/Zarzaczny at the No. 3 spot, 8-4. Tongoona and Hernan, ranked ninth in the region, are now 3-1 in dual matches.

Wolicki and Reckewey, playing at the No. 1 spot, fell to the No. 35 ranked team of Leber/Corrie, 4-8.

Nebraska returns to action Sunday, Feb. 24, against the No. 8 Baylor Bears. The match begins at noon in Waco, Texas.
